FLORENTINE WOODEN CARVED BUFFET FOR SALE
It is a dark brown buffet in two parts and between them there is a thick snow/pure white marble from Penteli. Its dimentions are 2.74m x 1.80m x 0.67m.
On the upper part, the two cupboard doors consist of panels with wooden reliefs portraying the godesses Demeter and DIana respectively. The lower part of the buffet consists of pillar and flower reliefs.
I inherited the above mentioned buffet from my aunt Mrs. Athanasiou Georgia nee Elias Dimitropoulos (sister of my father Sotirios Dimitropoulos). This buffet was given to her as a wedding present by the family of Mr. Konstantinos Lomvardos(1820-1888).
It was made by a sculpor from Florence (Italy) who made two unique buffets of this kind; one for Greece (the only one) and one for Italy. It was estimated that it was created and sculpted approximately 150 years ago.
Heiress of the buffet in question is Mrs. Anastasia Dimitropoulou, wige of Mr. Christos Tsolakoglou.
LOMVARDOS KONSTANTINOS (1820-1888)
THE ORIGINAL OWNER, AND THEN DONATOR, OF THE FLORENTIAN BUFFET
Konstantinos Lombardos was born in Zakynthos in 1820. He studied Medicine at the University of Athens and in 1847 he left for further training in Munich, where he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine.
After his return to the Ionian Islands, he practiced the medical profession and at the same time became involved in politics, leading the struggle for the Union of the English-controlled Ionian Islands with Greece, which was finally achieved in 1864.
Initially he was a member of the Radical Party and later the founder of the Unionist Radical Party. He was elected several times Member of Parliament of the United States of the Ionian Islands.
After the Union, he continued his political career in Greece from the position of Member of Parliament for Zakynthos and often Minister in various governments, such as Koumoundouros and Trikoupis. He was appointed plenipotentiary of Corfu in the national assembly of 1862 and also served as President of the Hellenic Parliament in the years 1870-1871.
He also distinguished himself as a journalist and in 1858 published the newspapers "Voice of the Ionian" and "Paligenesia". He died in Athens as acting Minister of the Interior on August 25, 1888 and his portfolio was temporarily taken over by Charilaos Trikoupis.
